Vegetable of the month – June

Butterball, Lollo Rosso and MizunaSalad Leaves

By June we should be well into our successional sowings, I usually start planting salad crops from around mid-April depending on the weather, they are usually slow to start in the cold soil but by June the soil should be good and warm and you will definitely need to be planting about once a fortnight to keep a supply of fresh green leaves for the salad bowl.

My favourite are cut and come again leaves which as soon as they are large enough you can snip off some leaves and then a couple of days later snip some more and just keep going, I normally manage three or four cuttings before moving on to the next patch.  A good mix is difficult to find as a lot seem to contain too many kale type leaves which can go a bit tough, this year I have tried ‘Franchi’ seeds which I was so impressed with that we are stocking them to buy as well.
